Angina and Hypertension and Their Treatment with Generic Lopressor, Toprol XL, Metoprolol XR Tablets Part 1

Introduction

Generic Lopressor, metoprolol XR Tablets, is a selective beta1-adrenoreceptor blocking agent. It is a white, virtually odorless and crystalline powder. This drug belongs to a class of drugs called beta-blockers. The inactive ingredients in this drug are colloidal silicon dioxide, cellulose compounds, D&C Red No. 30 Aluminum Lake (50-mg tablets), lactose, FD&C Blue No. 2 Aluminum Lake (100-mg tablets), magnesium stearate, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, povidone, talc, sodium starch glycolate and titanium dioxide.

Indication

Generic Lopressor, metoprolol XR is a drug prescribed for the treatment of angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure). This medication is also applied to treat or prevent heart attack.

Dosage and Administration

Toprol-XL has to be taken with a full glass of water at the same time every day.

For treatment of hypertension, standard early dosage of 100 mg daily has been recommended in single or divided doses. The dose is same while used alone or added to a diuretic.

Your doctor may increase the dosage at weekly (or longer) intervals to reduce blood pressure. The maximum dosage should not be more than 450 mg per day.

The common initial dosage to treat angina pectoris is 100 mg daily, given in two divided doses. Take the tablet with or immediately following meals. For angina pectoris, the maximum dose is 400 mg per day.

Contraindication

Generic Lopressor must not be used in sinus bradycardia, cardiogenic shock, heart block greater than first degree, and overt cardiac failure. It
